What is a Digital Signature Certificate?
A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is the electronic equivalent of a hand-written signature. It is issued by a licensed Certifying Authority (CA) under the IT Act, 2000 and is the legally accepted way to sign documents and forms on government portals in India. From 2021 onwards, only Class 3 DSCs are issued — Class 2 has been discontinued.
Where is a DSC required?
- MCA / ROC filings — company incorporation, DIN, DIR-3 KYC, AOC-4, MGT-7, INC-22, DPT-3.
- GST — GST registration, LUT, refunds, GSTR-9/9C signing by companies and LLPs.
- Income Tax — ITR signing for companies, LLPs and audited assessees, Form 15CA/15CB, TDS returns.
- EPFO & ESIC — employer registration, KYC seeding, transfer claims.
- Tenders & e-procurement — GeM, IREPS, J&K e-tendering, CPP portal.
- Trademark & patent — TM-A, reply to examination reports, patent applications.
Documents required
- PAN and Aadhaar (for video KYC)
- Active mobile linked to Aadhaar
- Passport-size photo
- For organisation DSC — Board Resolution / Authorisation Letter, GST or Incorporation certificate
